Project #5: Side table with tile top

All done!!!

After a delivery snafu, I patched up the table and got it safely into my house the second try.

As you can see, my Wii controllers found a nice home inside the table :).

Side table with tile top: Day 4

Day 4: Stained and tile placed.

What a long day! I sanded down the table, put one coat of espresso stain on, and glued the tile to the tabletop. The end is in sight. I will try to do the grout tomorrow and that will be the end of this project.

Side table with tile top: Day 3

Day 3: Installed the drawer rails on Sunday and stopped work since it was blazing hot. Continued on Monday night in the nice cool weather and made the drawer. The whole drawer is working smoothly now.
Next task is to attach the drawer front, sand everything down and hopefully get on my first coat of stain.

Side table with tile top: Day 2

Day 2: Assembly of the table.

I cut all the wood, notched out the legs so that they would almost be flush with the side of the table.

Once the legs were in place, I laid plywood and cement board on top of the notched legs. Here's the final shot at the end of day 2.

Next task is to attach the front top trim and start making the drawer.

Side table with tile top: Day 1

Day 1: Laying it all out.
I sized the tabletop with the tile I picked up Thursday morning. I'm using all the tile that I bought so there's no room for a screw up! The table top will have three layers, the bottom is 1/2 in plywood for support, the middle is 1/4 in cement board for the tile foundation, and the top is the glass tile.
The cement board is used because it does not expand and contract as much as plywood would during temperature changes.
Next step will be to build out the frame for the table. Got to make another run to the lumber store!

Side Table: Picking out tile

I found some nice glass mosaic tile at San Jose Tile and Stone. After consulting with my friends, I have decided to go with the ocean blue matte tiles.

The next step is to find the exact dimensions of the tile pieces so I can make the tabletop without cutting any tile.

Concept: Side table with tile top

Another HGTV inspired design...

I saw some nice glass mosaic tile that would be perfect for the top. The two colors i liked were orange and blue. They also had a lime green color available. I am leaning towards doing the orange mosaic.
